Chapters 8-11 Discussion Post

Respond to one of the questions below prior to our virtual meeting.

1. The Curiosity Challenge (Chapter 8)

Chapter 8 introduces the AMPP tools (Ask, Mirror, Paraphrase, Prime) to help us get others to share their path. It requires us to be "curious instead of furious." Which of the four AMPP skills feels the most "dangerous" or unnatural for you to use? For example, why is it so difficult to "Prime" (suggest what the other person might be thinking) when they are being silent or defensive? Describe a situation where "Priming" might have helped you uncover a misunderstanding sooner.

2. The "Action Gap" (Chapter 9)

The authors state that "the two most common pitfalls of action are unclear expectations about how decisions will be made and poorly back-loaded follow-through." Think of a project or task in your school or setting that "never seems to get done" despite everyone agreeing it’s important. Looking at the four methods of decision-making (Command, Consult, Vote, Consensus), which one was likely used, and how did a lack of a clear "Who does What by When" (WWBD) lead to the failure? How will you change your "handoff" from talking to doing next time?

3. The "Yeah, But" Reality Check (Chapters 10 & 11)

Chapter 11 addresses the "tough cases"—the coworkers who are chronically disrespectful, the spouses who give the silent treatment, or the bosses who are "untouchable." Which "Yeah, But" scenario from Chapter 11 resonated with you the most? After finishing the book, do you still believe that person is "un-talk-to-able," or has your perspective shifted? What is the one skill from the entire book that you are most nervous—but also most committed—to testing out on your "tough case" this month?
